From Lord of Ajasa to Olamide - The Rise of 'Local Rappers'

In the late 80s, early 90s, Nigerian rap lovers were only exposed to the hardcore American English style of the genre from the US. Later, Nigerians artists started to interpret the art in our  own version of the English language as well as pidgin.
Rap acts like Trybesmen with Eldee D Don, KB and Freestyle; Swat Root, a group which included Mode 9, Terry Tha Rapman, Six Foot Plus and Rule Clean; as well as Eedris AbdulKareem became pioneers of the contemporary form of the genre in Nigeria.
However, another set of rappers came up almost simultaneously, who preferred to adapt the urban American street expression to our own indigenous languages. Unlike the early pioneers, these rappers earned some appeal since they flowed in languages Nigerians understood.
These days the pioneers have been replaced by more popular acts like Olamide, Phyno and Reminisce but their legacy will never be taken for granted.
Here is a list of some rappers who pioneered indigenous rap in Nigeria:
Lord of Ajasa will take the forefront in the innovation of mainstream indigenous rap with his first single ‘Ma Yi Lo’ in 2000. He went on to produce a monster hit, ‘Fe Nu So’ featuring 9ice on his second album, ‘Second Turning By The Right’. He is known for spitting strictly in Yoruba with nary an English word mixed into his rhymes.

Then came 2Phat, another Yoruba rapper under ID Cabassa’s Coded Tunes. He is popular for his ‘Bere Mi’ track featuring 9ice, released in 2009.
Ill Bliss pioneered rapping in Igbo with his first album, ‘Dat Ibo Boy’ which had hits like ‘Aiye Po Gan’ and ‘You Go Wound.’ He has gone on to release three studio albums Dat Ibo Boy, Oga Boss and Powerful.

After Ill Bliss came Ni**a Raw who now goes by Mr. Raw, another Igbo rapper popular for his hit track ‘Obodo’ featuring comedian, Klint Da Drunk.

However, with the rise of the late Dagrin, came a new twist in the game. He brought in modernity and streets vibes. Although his first album , ‘Still On The Matter’ didn’t  make much waves, his second attempt ‘Executive CEO’ did.
He brought life to the game and what many indigenous rappers today leverage on. Popular for his hit track ‘Pon Pon’ and over 200 collabos before his untimely demise on April 22, 2010, that left the whole nation mourning.

Dagrin’s death paved the way for new school indigenous rap artistes like, Reminisce, Olamide, Phyno, Lil, Kesh, CDQ, Chinko Ekun, Base One, among others.
Phyno, Olamide and Reminisce have gone on to be the faces of indigenous rap in Nigeria. The trio did a single owning their act as ‘Local Rappers’.

In your opinion, who is Nigeria’s greatest indigenous rapper ever? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Don Jazzy Reveals How He Discovered Mavin Record Artists

Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy has spoken on how social media has helped some artistes on his label.
According to Daily Post, Michael Collins, famously known as Don Jazzy said he discovered one of his label acts, Reekado Banks on Twitter.
The wizard of hits also said two of his artistes, Tiwa Savage and Korede Bello owe their success to social media.
He said: “If today, you were a ‘mad talented’ but unknown musician that is yet to ‘blow’ – knowing all the things you know now, what would you do to get noticed?
“I would find a way to stand out on social media as I showcase my talent. FalzTheBahdGuy with his ‘Broda Taju’ alter ego Instagram videos turned him into a sensation. More recently, a talented guitarist named Godwyn was posting some of his renditions on Instagram which I ended up discovering. Within 48 hrs, we had him at Mavin studio recording and releasing ‘Promise’.
“He has gone on from there to get paid performances and continues to establish himself. Mavin artist Reekado Banks was discovered via Twitter. Linda Ikeji worked hard and smart and is the biggest online personality today. You don’t need a prophet to tell you that social media is the fastest place you can get noticed today. Don’t be in a hurry to get a million fans in a day.
“As long as you are doing something right, your fan base will grow daily even if it is 10 new people that you convert each day. Before you know it, the right person will notice and the rest will be history.”
Don Jazzy stormed the Nigerian music scene in the early 2000s alongside his once upon a time friend and business partner, D’Banj. Together, they formed Mo’Hits Records.
After the duo parted ways, Don Jazzy started his own music label, Mavin Records under which he has mentored and produced music acts like Tiwa Savage, Dr Sid, Reekado Banks, Di’Ja, Korede Bello and others.

You will be notified when the status of the orders changes from “Pending” to “Approved” and even wen declined. You only get paid when an order is “approved. Konga Payout threshold is from 10k, 15k, 20k, 25k, 30k and 100k. Choose the 10k payout threshold for a start so you won’t have to miss a payment, even when you have made over 10k on your commission account. Konga affiliate payments are made on the second Friday of the new month after you have reached the payout threshold. So if you chose 10k payment threshold and you made a 10k commission for the month, you should be expecting your payment on the second Friday of the next month. Remember to enter your bank account details on your profile page to receive your commissions when it is due. Important Notice Always ensure whatever products you promote matches your website/blog niche if you choose to promote Konga products on your website/blog. For example, you can’t be a fashion blogger and be promoting electronic products. Always promote a Konga product that relates to your website/blog niche. Ensure to promote products that naturally match your site niche, by doing that, you won’t provoke your audience. If you are a tech blogger like me, you can conveniently integrate tech product promotion such as mobile phones, computers and other electronics with your blogging without making it obvious to your audience you are trying to sell them a product. Lastly, you have successfully become a Konga affiliate marketer! Now it’s time to promote and advertise Konga products on your website/blog, social media platforms and emails. You can promote Konga products via posts or banner/text ads on your Blog or Website and also on social media platforms, like postings Konga banner ads on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, BBM other social media network.
